Available licenses for terrestrial television
The application period for two national licenses to broadcast TV and searchable teletext in SD quality in Sweden has now ended.
On the 18th of February 2020 the Swedish Press and Broadcasting Authority granted new licenses to broadcast TV in the terrestrial network. Two of these licenses have been revoked and are now available to apply for.
The application period is 22 October–17 November 2020.
You can submit your application via our e-services.
There are two licenses available.
- 1 license for services to broadcast 24 hours a day
- 1 license for services to broadcast between 6 p.m. to 6 a.m
The license period ends on the 31st of December 2025.
Criteria for obtaining a license
A license to broadcast television and searchable teletext may only be granted to a broadcaster that has the financial and technical resources to broadcast throughout the entire license period and is prepared to cooperate with other license holders in technical matters.
Before making a decision to grant a license, we have to take into consideration that broadcasting frequencies are to be used for programme services that appeal to an audience with a variety of interests and tastes but also that the programme services come from broadcasters independent of one another.
In 2019, the Swedish Radio and Television Authority developed a strategy that describes starting points and direction for the work with broadcasting licenses for terrestrial television. The purpose of the strategy is to contribute to increased clarity for players in the market regarding the conditions that may be set for broadcasting licenses.
Since the strategy was adopted, the Authority decided on the 30th of September 2020 to revise certain conditions of the current broadcasting licenses. The decision means that by the 31st May 2021 at the latest, all channels will be broadcast in a more efficient compression technology. At this time, additional channels will begin to be broadcast in HD quality and TV3, TV4 and Kanal 5 will only be broadcast in HD quality.
How to apply
You submit your application via our e-services. Click on category "TV". The Authority charges an application fee of SEK 45,000 per application
